How to Repair Sheetrock

It is possible to repair small holes in drywall using a few simple tools and techniques. Oftentimes repairing holes is necessary to sell a home, or if you want to polish off a room you've just redecorated.

Holes measuring up to a couple of inches across are quite easily fixed. The smallest sized holes take the least effort - all you have to do is fill the holes with a small amount of joint compound or filler putty. Just spread the joint compound or filler on the opening with a putty knife. Leave to dry and then sand smooth.

Larger holes require some more work, but aren't too difficult to fill. You can either buy a repair patch from a hardware store or follow the steps listed below. It all depends on what's easier for you. Repair patches bridge the hole and support the joint compound. They are made of self-adhesive metal or fiberglass mesh.

The do-it-yourself method:

  1. Cut some pegboard larger than the size of the hole (but only slightly, as you still need to fit it into the space). This becomes the backing for a patch.

  • Now you place the backing you've created onto the wall and tie a wire to it. Spread some compound on hardboard and slip it onto the wall. This will cause the backing to cling to the inside surface of the wall.
  • Secure the backing by tying wire to a pencil (make sure to twist it tight). Wait for the patch to dry; then cut off the wire and fill the nook with compound.
  • Now you can finish the job - fill the space with a few thin coats of compound, lightly sand the area, and sponge to blend the repair in with the rest of the wall. Now the wall is repaired and you can prime and paint it.
  • During the renovation or redecorating process, repairing drywall may not seem like the most important task, but every little detail counts. To give your home a polished appearance, finishing every job properly is the best way to ensure you're satisfied with the results.
