Wireless Doorbell Guide

Wireless Doorbell Guide

There are two kinds of doorbells on the market, wired doorbells and wireless doorbells. Wired doorbells run off household current. The bell is wired to the chime through the walls. Wired doorbells are the most common and are found in older homes as well as newer homes. Wireless doorbells as the name implies, do not require wiring. The bell, which is actually a transmitter, is mounted at the front door. The chime, which is also a receiver, can be placed anywhere within range. A wireless doorbell offers flexibility and ease.

Installing a wireless doorbell takes very little time. The bell is mounted at the front door using either double sided tape, or it can be screwed into place. The chime unit is placed inside the house. Some chimes are independent units that run off batteries and require no electrical current. The only problem is that these batteries will have to be changed periodically. Alternatively, you can plug in the chime unit to the household current and you won’t have to worry about changing batteries.

If you have an old wired doorbell that doesn’t work or can’t be heard from well enough for you, you can easily replace it with a wireless doorbell. All you need is a screwdriver, some electrical tape and a few minutes. Before beginning, be sure to turn off the electricity to the doorbell. Even though this is usually low voltage, it’s better safe than sorry. Next, just unscrew the doorbell swath and remove the outlet from the home’s exterior. Unwrap or cut the wires from the old doorbell and tape up the ends. Stuff the old wires back into the hole and cover the hole with the new wireless bell unit. The process is easy enough for anyone to do.

Wireless doorbells are perfect for apartment or home rentals. Because most landlords do not accept invasive repairs done to their property, it can be hard to get them to allow you to install a wired doorbell. Likewise, most renters don’t want to put money into an apartment or home that doesn’t belong to them. Wireless doorbells don’t require you to put any holes in the walls, and the can be easily removed and carried with you when you move. No landlord should have a problem with that.

When choosing a wireless doorbell, there are many different options available to you. Some wireless doorbells have a larger range than others and/or come with multiple chime units to increase the area where you can hear the bell. If you have a large home, you should consider areas where your doorbell may be inaudible such as a basement, back room, garage, attic etc. Before you buy, make sure you get a doorbell that you will be able to hear from all areas of your home.

Wireless doorbells overall are very affordable, but there is a range of price points on the market. The more expensive wireless doorbells typically have more options that are customizable and a greater range from the transmitter to the receiver. Some wireless doorbell chime units let you choose the type of chime you like to hear as well as adjust the volume of the unit. Lower end doorbells provide basic functions that may be enough for a small home, but may not work as well for larger dwellings.

There are a variety of decorating options when it comes to wireless doorbells. The original wireless doorbells were all basically the same plain white units. These days, you can choose from many different styles of both the bell unit and the chime unit depending on the type of home you have and its furnishings. The most variety can be found when shopping on the Internet, but you can find many different options at large home improvement stores as well. Happy hunting!
