Efficient Heat PumpsEven though you can use a heat pump in virtually any type of climate, heat pumps work best in moderate climates. Heat pumps do not work as well in climates that have frequent below zero temperatures, as sub-zero temperatures will cause moisture in the unit to frost over. This can require the use of a supplemental or secondary heater while the heat pump unit works to defrost its coils. The need for a supplemental heater is inconvenient and diminishes a heat pump’s practicality is such situations. Generally speaking, getting a heat pump with higher efficiency ratings will save you money in the long term because you will spend less on energy to operate it. It’s important to remember, however, that higher SEER (over 13) and HSPF rated units will require a higher initial investment, and it may take time to recuperate those costs. If you don’t plan to stay in your home very long, you may not have the chance to see any real savings from the added efficiency. The added efficiency, however, will be a value to the environment no matter how long you personally get to use it. Even lower SEER and HSPF rated heat pumps still run cleaner than gas powered furnaces. Saving energy is positive for the environment and helps fight global warming. As with all air conditioning and heating units, providing proper maintenance is key to optimizing efficiency. Choosing the appropriately sized unit is also crucial. You should follow all of the manufacturer’s recommendations for sizing and maintenance or you could end up sacrificing your added efficiency. Besides greater efficiency, heat pumps also have a number of benefits over boilers, furnaces and refrigerated air conditioning systems. For one, they provide both heating and cooling in one unit so they can be operated year round. They also create healthier air indoors by causing less dehumidification than conventional heaters in cold weather. Air circulated by heat pumps is more uniform than with a furnace, creating a more comfortable environment. Part 1: Heat Pump Efficiency Ratings
