In drier climates the humidifying properties of evaporative coolers are a major advantage. Refrigerated air conditioners are actually dehumidifiers, so they will make the air even drier. With an evaporative cooler, you kill two birds with one stone and cool the air while adding much needed moisture.

Likewise, you can save as much as three fourths of the energy cost to operate refrigerated air by choosing an evaporative cooler. Evaporative coolers do not have as many working parts to power as refrigerated air conditioners, so they require less energy. On the flip side, however, evaporative coolers use several gallons of water and hour, so some but not all of the energy savings will be spent on water costs.
