Flower Gardening TipsPlanting and cultivating a flower garden can a wonderfully satisfying outdoor hobby and will also increase the value of your home. When you first begin flower gardening, it may seem like an overwhelming process, but with a little planning and education it can become a relaxing and fulfilling pursuit. One of the first mistakes made by many beginning flower gardeners is to begin without a plan. While virtually no garden plot is irreparable and most plants can be moved, knowing where you want your plants to go in relation to color scheme, lighting needs, and sizing can save you a lot of time and trouble and a lot of wear and tear on your budding plants. When choosing flowering plants, focus on two specific criteria. How well will the flowering plants you are choosing fit into the design idea you have for your garden? Choose plants that have appropriate sizes, colors, and blooming seasons. The second criterion is to choose plants that will do well in the climate and environment you are introducing them to. Select plants that will thrive in the climate you live in. Choose flowers that will not be killed or stifled by the temperature, water conditions, soil conditions, or the surrounding plants. Know the environment in which you are planting the flowers. Know the conditions of your soil, the amount of sunlight each spot in your garden receives, and tailor your planting design to accommodate each of these conditions. Before you begin flower gardening, know the advantages and limitations of your gardening spot. There are many different varieties of plants appropriate for flower gardening. Some flowers die off during the winter months, but grow again in the spring each year. These flowers are called perennials and can be a valuable asset to the beginning garden. Perennials don’t need to be replanted each year. The seeds lie dormant under the ground during the cold winter months and begin growing again in the early spring. Annuals are flowers that grow out their entire life cycle in the spring and summer, only to die off in the cold winter months. Annuals add brilliant splashes of color to any flower gardening project, but must be replanted each year. Choosing a variety of perennials and annuals can help you maintain a healthy and varied garden.
