Tree Trimming Safety Guide

The most important thing you can do for yourself when it comes time to trimming your trees is to exercise caution and be aware of any potential safety risks. Tree trimming can pose a variety of safety risks to the average homeowner.

Whether trimming or pruning smaller varieties of trees, such as fruit or flowering trees, or undertaking larger trimming projects, such as oaks or pines, when it comes to safety an ounce of prevention of worth a pound of cure every time!

Before beginning your tree trimming project, know what hazards are nearby. Check to make sure there are no power lines, fuse boxes, or any other potentially hazardous electrical currents in the vicinity of your tree trimming project. Check the branches of your trees to make sure there are no potentially hazardous foreign objects hidden among the foliage.

Wear appropriate safety gear. If you are just trimming smaller trees in your yard, wear safety gloves and appropriate eyewear. If you are trimming larger trees that require you to be elevated, make sure you use the appropriate safety harnesses and ropes.

One of the most common hazards of tree trimming is faulty equipment. Make sure you are familiar with your equipment and that you use it in a safe manner. Using equipment for tasks it is not designed for can lead to unfortunate accidents. Always use each piece of equipment for its appropriate, designed use. If using a ladder for your tree trimming project, make sure to secure it carefully before putting any weight on it.

Another common hazard of tree trimming is broken, rotting, or splitting branches. If a branch is damaged, it can fall in an unpredictable manner when you are trimming it. Rotting or otherwise damaged branches can splinter or fall in an uncontrolled manner. Before you begin tree trimming, inspect your branches for potentially damaged areas. Be aware of any splitting branches that may cause additional problems in your tree trimming project.

If your tree trimming project requires elevation or climbing, make sure you don’t put any weight on branches that are rotting or damaged. Be aware of the limbs and branches that won’t support your weight before you begin climbing.
