Vegetable Gardening in the CityGrowing a vegetable garden in the city can be a tricky but rewarding process. Whether you have a backyard or plan to do your vegetable gardening in containers, a little preparation and attention to detail can lead to a healthy crop of fresh vegetables. Even if you do not have a backyard, you can easily make do with a windowsill, porch, balcony, or any other area with access to light. Growing a vegetable garden in containers also has added hidden advantages. Container gardening can help you avoid plant disease, contamination, and poor growing conditions. If you have a backyard, tailor your vegetable selection to the amount of space that you have, as well as the growing conditions. Some vegetables require more growing space than others. Educate yourself about the growing parameters of each variety of vegetable before choosing your vegetable garden selection. Get to know the growing conditions of your backyard. Is the soil good for growing plants? Does the backyard area get enough sunlight to support vegetable gardening? What kind of depth does the soil have? Is there a potential for small animals to get into your yard and disturb your vegetable beds? Do you share a backyard with other families or do many others have access to your yard? Don’t have a backyard? No problem. Many people successfully grow small container-bound vegetable gardens in their apartments, on their fire escapes, or even using window boxes. Choose vegetables for your indoor garden that don’t require as much sunlight or as much growing space. Most vegetables that do well in an outdoor garden will also do well in an inside gardening container. Some vegetable gardening plants do better in hanging pots rather than potting containers left on the ground. Tomatoes, for example will thrive better if the vines can hang downward. This will cause better growth and usually larger, healthier tomatoes. When vegetable gardening indoors and in containers, make sure that your potting containers drain adequately. Unlike growing plants outdoors, close-bottomed containers can cause water to pool and slowly poison your plants. Using containers that have draining features will increase your chances of successful vegetable gardening.
