Flexible Track Lighting Installation

Before you buy, you will also need to determine how long a run of track you will need. Several different lengths of track can be combined to give you the desired overall length. You can also wrap around corners or create a cross pattern using the various connectors available. Another thing to consider is what type of track heads to use.

The track heads you choose should fit into your decorating style. Be sure to buy the right type of light bulb for the track head. In some situations, you may want to adjust the height of the track lighting using track support adapters. This allows the actual track to hang below the ceiling.

When laying out your track plan, take the following steps. First, measure the length of the track you will need. Second, determine where along the track you will need power, whether at the end or somewhere along the track. Thirdly, select the proper connecting units needed for your plan (a flexible connector). Then, select the style, finish and quantity of track lighting fixtures you will need.

Finally, keep in mind that a track lighting system is flexible and you can always add to it later if needed. You will need the following items to begin your fixed track lighting installation: Screwdrivers, Wire Strippers, Drill and Drill Bits, Voltage Tester, Wire Nuts, Electrical Tap, Ladder, Track, Track Connectors, Cover Plate, Lighting Heads, Bulbs, Toggle Bolts and/or Wood Screws.

The first step in any electrical project is to turn off the power to the circuit you are using. Use the voltage tester to ensure that the circuit is in fact off. If this is a replacement fixture, remove whatever lighting fixture may already exist. Once the old light fixture is removed, check the wires and make sure they are still in good condition. If the insulation is hard and brittle, use the wire strippers to cut through and strip about 3/4" of insulation off the wires. If you are installing track lighting where wiring does not yet exist, hire a local electrician to at least wire the power supply where you need it.

The next step is to mount the track on the ceiling or wall. Be sure to use the proper screws for the material you are working with. If you have a drywall ceiling, you’ll need anchors for the screws for added strength. Concrete ceiling will also require special screws. Be sure you have the appropriate drill bits as well.

Follow the manufacturers directions for mounting the track. There may be some specific steps that are unique to the brand you choose. Most track lighting systems use a length of exposed electrical wiring hidden inside a plastic or aluminum track. The track can be wired directly into pre-existing circuits or plugged into wall sockets for power.

After the track has been mounted to the wall or ceiling, a separate lamp and socket assembly can be fitted into place anywhere along the track you choose. The light bulb is activated when metal plates in the socket make contact with the charged wiring in the track. Position the track heads wherever you want along the track. You can go up and down in number of track heads, but be sure to stay within the recommended range or you might have problems.

Finally, if you are uncomfortable with the process of installing your flexible track lighting on your own, bring in your local electrician for assistance. Wiring the fixture to an existing power supply can be done by a lay person, but it does take a little time and if you are unfamiliar with shutting off electricity, it can be a little risky. Any electrician can easily do the job.
